ChallengeSpot the data corruption
The following code does not output the right value, can you tell why?
This has been a real bug that we ran into (with only slightly more complicated code.
The sort of things that make you just stare at the screen in disbelief when you realize what is going on…

Using dictionary Add or [] doesn't return the dictionary
Extra = "Food"
Extra = "Food"
I would guess that what's happening is that you are assigning the
Extra
value to be"Food"
so it would be decomposed to something like this:There is no comma at the end of line 11. So line 7 (after the equals sign) up to line 11 creates a Dictionary with two entries (Skim, Viscosity) . Then line 12 adds a new entry, "Type" with the value "Food". The added value ("Food") is then also assigned to Extra, since it is the result of the assignment operator. That this works at all without a syntax error is only because of the dynamic.
If you would add a comma at the end of line 11, it wouldn't compile anymore, since
Item
has no indexer. The correct code probably is supposed to have lines 11 and 12 switched (and a comma added at the end of line 10):For what it's worth, JetBrains Rider 2022.2 EAP 1 with standard settings shows a warning directly after the closing curly brace on line 11:
"Assignment expression inside member initializer looks suspicious. Comma is probably missing."
A good linter can really save a lot of time and trouble.
