Book ReviewThe Last Herald Mage
The Last Herald Mage is another of Mercedes Lackey* trilogies, and a very good one at that. The three books are:
Unlike Arrows, each of the books stand very well by itself, but they make for a very good package together. The story is about a gay Mage and is quite different than Arrows. Where in Arrows we got a story about the growth of a single character, and the trilogy covered only a handful of years, in The Last Herald Mage we get a few flashes into the life of Vanyel, the hero.
The first book deals with a early adulthood and the discovery of magic powers in Vanyel. How he got his powers, how he became a Herald, etc. The second is about a mass murder with big political implications that Vanyel has to sort out, and in the process he has to sort himself out and balance his duties with himself. The third is dealing with a threat to Valdemar as an enemy mage tries to take down Valdemar's mages, and succeed in ridding of all of them buy Vanyel, who seeks revenge.
The end is bitter-sweet, sort of, Vanyel dies, and the enemy mage is dead. But I'm starting to wish that the heroes would live happily ever after, which doesn't seem to happen in Lackey's novel. Nevertheless, highly recommended if you've several days free.
*Yes, I'm addicted, so what? Another ~10 books by her are on the mail... :-)
