I've seen quite a few Sharepoint installations, and it usually turns into a wiki with document sharing. I wouldn't consider it a development platform at all. maybe an collaboration/integration tool that has programmability.

Sure, maybe creating a webpart is simple.  
  
  
But if you get into the internals to change look and feel it gets ugly quickly!  
  
  
None of my customers liked the default Sharepoint look and feel.
