Unnatural acts on source code

NHibernate is female

I giving NHibernate instruction recently, and I am doing it in Techno-Hebrew, which means that I speak in Hebrew but all the technical terms are in English. It has some amusing side affects, and I find it simply hilarious when I hear someone else does it (Techno Hebrew/Arabic or Techno Hebrew/Russian are killers).

At any rate, Hebrew is one of those languages where everything has a gender. Wind is female, and apple is male, etc.

At about half way through the lesson, I found that I have kept referring to NHibernate as She.

I have nothing further to add...

NHibernate does not have enough moustache to be a female

in german ;) I have a strong language feeling

that NHibernate would be a neuter in german (das / es). (german

is not my mothertongue, but I was speaking it everyday for a while).

from http://www.brucespringsteen.net/songs/MaryQueenOfArkansas.html:

"You're not man enough for me to hate or woman enough for kissing"

In Dutch it would also be neutral.

It would be male in lithuanian,

but that's very very vague.

You can't just make "NHibernate" sound like a true lithuanian word, and mostly all "odd" words go into male

That's actually the right thing to do.

NHibernate is not it's own noun in hebrew (like "french armchair" isn't). What you do if find the closest family member that reffers to the same object and take the f/m inclination from it. "french armchair" is male because "chair" is male. NHibernate is female becuase "Framework" is female.

Funny; it is the complete opposite in French:

Wind is male, and apple is female, and framework/software is male.
